Characters: Quán & Yun | Lilafly Sinan | AppyNinja Evie & Satomi | FlyLu
Prologue
Silence. It was both a welcome companion and a dreaded foe. In the city life, silence meant peace and usually came with some well-needed free time. Out in the wild, however, silence was a danger. It was more a sound in itself than the absence of one, filling the air with menace. It meant predators and ambushes. In her case, she was both predator and prey so the silence could mean either a good outcome or a bad one. An unsuccessful hunt was unacceptable. She needed to catch and eat something on the few days she could manage to sneak out. Even when Ms Mio promised her cover and had at least a certain understanding of her situation, there still was always a risk. And Quán did not take risks when they were not absolutely necessary. She had been done with risking things recklessly the moment her son had been born three years ago. She could not afford mistakes.
That night, she was lucky and managed to take down a boar. It was too much for her to eat alone, but she did not care. There were always scarvengers who would be delighted in the scraps she left. As if summoned, not a scarvenger, but an equally unwelcome creature made his entrance just as she finished eating. Good, because he might have let her lose her appetite.
"A lovely night to be alive and consume life, Quán Shui. I thank you kindly for this soul." She had to restrain herself from growling in annoyance. The kitsune was a nuisance to her the same way as a fly would be. An immortal fly. An immortal fly the size of a fox with enough mischief for at least three of his kind. His repeated use of her full—fake—name was only done to the creature's own amusement. He knew that it was not her real name and delighted in repeating her lie to her, no doubt in the hopes of her eventually snapping and telling him her real name. She would do no such thing though. She was not stupid.
"Take it and leave me alone. I'm not in the mood for your usual spiel, Hibiki." Quán was quite certain that it was not the kitsune's real name, but it was the only name he had given her and therefore was what she refered to him as. Whenever she did so, he smiled that full-fanged grin of his that indicated that he knew more than she did and delighted in withholding information from her.
"Hmm, snarky," he remarked and miraculously left it at that. Whatever gods existed and looked down at her at this moment, they seemed to mean it well with her. At least for that night. In any case, Quán did not see any reason to encourage the wicked creature further by replying. She left him behind in silence and while it still held a certain dread, she was glad for it.
— o.0.o —
The gods might mean it well with her, but they certainly did not mean it well with someone else if the hellish scream was any indication. It made Quán stop dead in her tracks and turn to the direction the scream had come from. Now, she was not unused to screams. Animalistic screams were something she had long since tuned out as she had become accustomed to hunting and even peoples' screams were something she had unwillingly become accustomed to. When one lived in hotel Mio, then barely moon passed in which absolutely nothing happened. Rapes and murders had become almost as usual as changing a bed sheet was to her these days. When possible, she tried to prevent them, but the narrow hallways and the small hotel rooms in which such crimes usually happened were not made for hiding. She would be seen when trying to prevent them and that would let questions arise that she was not willing to answer. Satomi could do only so much for her after all.
Therefore, when Quán heard the scream, she took off with only a small moment's hesitation. She was outside, she was in a dark outfit and she wore an illusion spell. All these things were to her advantage. If she could prevent a fatality from happening tonight, then she'd go to bed with a lighter heart.
The moonlight shone down on her, doing fairly little to disguise her, even with her currently black coat, as she sneaked through the garden of a tea shop. She heard glass shatter as something—teacups maybe?—fell to the floor. "Now look what you did, you worthless bitch!" A male voice snarled, which was answered by a timid whimper. From the tone of it, the occupants of the tea shop were two canines. Maybe wolves. "I'm sorry, I—" The female voice was cut off by a loud snarl and then yelped. She was defenitely being abused, but Quán needed to be closer to find out more. The moonlight prevented her from lurking directly by the door of the tea shop, so she used the shadows to her advantage, sneaking among the cherry trees. She made no sound and was cautious to keep her head angled in a way that her eyes would not reflect light and draw anyone's attention. When she was finally in a position to see what was going on, she had distanced herself from the tea house again quite a bit. While no air mage, she still had no trouble hearing what was going on.
The woman—a white wolf—was lying on her back, whimpering while a tall, bulky man—a red-brown wolf—stood above her, his lips drawn back in a snarl. The shattered teapots lay around them, but judging by the fact that the woman had screamed even before she had let them fall to the floor, this was not the only reason for the aggression. She was obviously bleeding from a bite at the neck too. "Now tell me what you mean with 'no'," the brown wolf snarled and the white wolf tried to make herself smaller. "I—" "Don't talk back to me! You are my wife, so when I ask something of you, you have to obey!"
Quán had to resist the urge to hiss. This was exactly why she had not trusted anyone but herself with raising Yun. Let the world think of her what they will, but at least her son would not become an abusive man like that.
She was about to sneak around the house in the shadows and maybe ambush the wolf from another room, but that did not happen, because he kept talking. "Either you do what I say or this will get ugly. Last warning." Quán saw red. Another face appeared in her had and a disgustingly smooth voice to accompany it. "Alright little one, last warning."
She could not tell when she had summuned the bow and arrow. The next thing she saw was the red-brown wolf fall to the side, an arrow made out of light sticking in his body, impailing his heart. He was dead. Quán could not help the startled gasp that escaped her mouth as she dismissed the glowing bow and let it dissolve back into moonlight.
She had killed someone.
The dark mare did not stay to find out what the woman's reaction to her dead abusive husband would be, nor did she care at that moment. She had killed a person. This has never happened before. She had gone rough with weapons and severely injured people before but she had never killed. She had wanted to kill once. She had wanted it very badly. This one time had also been her most fatal mistake and the darkest moment of her life. She shook her head frantically while she ran, tears streaming out of her eyes.
Do not think of it! You cannot think of it! It's over! You're safe! You live!
None of these thoughts brought any comfort, because the undeniable truth was still fresh in her mind: She had killed a person...and she did not regret it.
Two months later...

Evie | Scout from the Verensa Herd Words: 218
"It's been a long fucking day."
"Yeah no kiddin'."
Evie raised an eyebrow. She was not actually expecting a reply from that remark. Conell did not speak much, so when he did he was either getting impatient with someone, or he was speaking about practical things. Evie had heard very little about him before the mission because he kept so much to himself or people he already knew. She had come to learn he was reckless and hard, but she had noticed every now and then that he was surprisingly selfless, and had shown other traits that showed he was a good man when it came to it. He was some years older than both her and Sinan. Her guess was a little bit over 20.
The trio was tired. They had been walking for a long time now and was looking for a place to stay, and at this point, anything would do. Despite being tired, Evie was kind of excited too. She had never been to Eriwon before. She was even so lucky that their mission took place in the capital. While she was looking around for a place for them to stay, she did enjoy looking around at even the simple things that made this city different from Nordberg, which she was so used too.
Mio Satomi | Wonsu citizen - High society Words: 198 Satomi was not sure why, but she had been having trouble sleeping the last few nights. She had gotten annoyed with it by now, and decided to leave her bed. She walked out on the little balcony and felt the early summer breeze. It was colder than she expected, then again she had not been up and awake this early for a long time now. The sun was not up yet, but a lighter blue was appearing on the horizon in the distance, and the bigger stars were still shining on the sky above her.
Satomi took on a blue dress and made something nice out of her hair now that she had time. She then went down for the eating halls, only to remember that they were not even open yet. At this time, they were already working in the kitchens to make the food that would be served rather soon. Even some of the cleaning people would be awake at this point. Probably preparing the eating halls or cleaning the entrance before any of the early guests would come.
Having nothing else to do, she walked out of her room and headed to the ground floor.

Sinan | Scout
Sinan was send to Eriwon with another scout and a warrior. He didn’t really have anything to do with those two before they got the same mission. Maybe he saw them once, twice in the herd but otherwise, he never spoke to them. However, it wasn’t difficult to find out their personalities. Evie was stubborn and rebellious, Conell, on the other hand, was quiet. Not the best company Sinan wished for, but it’s not like he could pick his teammates. The stallion acted professional and concentrated on the task, or at least he tried. Sinan didn’t like the idea of visiting Eriwon. He didn’t have any nice memories of his last visit. It reminds him of Brook. How she told him that she was pregnant. From there on everything went downhill and his life changed. Mean things were said and mistakes were made, but it was the past. There is nothing he could change now. It was difficult to learn how to live with those memories and regrets, but it worked out - thanks to his friends. His life didn’t change a lot. He still enjoyed his freedom, had his sarcastic attitude and enjoyed the company of pretty mares. However, he got more responsible and thought twice about before saying something out loud.
When the trio arrived at Eriwon, it was early in the morning. It was still dark but it wouldn’t take until the sunrise. The three horses walked through the city. Evie seemed amazed by it. Sadly Sinan could share her interest. “Just pick one already.” the stallion said to the mare, as they already walked past some of the hotels. “We don’t need the prettiest one. Everything a good hotel need is a room service or a bar.” Sinan added lightly tired from their journey.

Mio Satomi | Wonsu citizen - High society
Words: 124 As expected - and as it should be - the people hired, and even some slaves were already working. Moving things around, preparing rooms and cleaning the halls. She got closer and closer to the kitchens that smelled wonderfully. She was not expected in the kitchen, especially not at this time of the day. She assured all of them that there was nothing to worry about and she was lucky that some bread had just been taking out of the oven. Despite the baker advising her not to take them as they were still hot, she did anyway and went on her way.
She found some peace at the entrance and decided to light a few candles in the window and enjoy her bread.
Evie | Scout from the Verensa Herd
Words: 470
"I am not looking for a pretty one," Evie snapped. She did not like being associated with common girls who were busy with their looks or the look of the things around them. "- just anything open. It looked like everything is damn closed at this time of the day." It did not take them long before they stumbled open a building with the sign "Hotel Mio" in front of it. And to their luck, there was light in the window, at least one of them. "Halle-fucking-lujah!" Evie said, and she walking over to the hotel's front door. When she tried to open it, it was locked, but before anyone could say anything, it was opened up by a pretty black mare. "Hello. My apologies, but we are currently closed," she said. "Please, we have traveled very far and there is nowhere else we can go that is open. Will you please consider to let us come in?" Evie asked. It took almost all her remaining energy to be polite. She was tired and was not about to let this opportunity go, but she knew she had to be professional and polite if they had to have a chance. The mare looked at all three of them for a moment. She then smiled. "I guess I can do an exception, but you have to be quiet, we have guests sleeping." "Of course." Evie made a sigh of relief and stepped inside together with the rest of the team.
There was nothing except for the candles in the window to light the room, but that was too be expected since there were not even open yet. They had been lucky. "Let's see here..." The mare said as she looked around in drawers and found papers. If it was not for the flame next to her, the mare would not be able to see anything. Firemage, she thought. She also thought the woman was oddly unused to this. It did not look like routine for her, but she did not care enough to ask into it, maybe she would later if she got the chance. She just wanted a place to sleep. The mare found the paper she needed, Evie told them their names - cover names of course - and got the key to their room. The mare called a raccardi to escort them to their room, since the hotel had an odd way of numbering their rooms. Evie wanted to deny the help but was too tired to, and the last thing she wanted was to get lost and waste time she would be spending in a bed.
The team got to their room - number 36 - on the third and highest floor. To their relief, there were three separate beds, and Evie went head-on on one of them.

Yun | precious baby boy
Yun woke up alone in the room he shared with his mother. Well, alone was not completly correct since Raven was there. The name of the Raccardi came from his completely black fur and feathers and equally dark eyes. No one had wanted him on the slave market since they thought he was possessed by an evil spirit, but Yun had begged his mother to get him when they had looked for a Raccardi. It also meant that Raven had been rather cheap, which had made his mother happy. Yun had been the one to name the black chimerian creature and even though the initial purpose of buying a Raccardi in the first place had been to find an unbiased babysitter, the two of them had become best friends. It had been at the time when Yun had found it too boring to stay with his mother the whole day while she worked, since her work was not particularly exciting. Auntie Satomi sometimes played with him, but she was usually very busy and therefore did not have much time. To buy a Raccardi had been her suggestion, even though Yun's mother had not been thrilled with the idea. She did not like slaves the way other people did and she had admitted to him that it felt wrong to use a creature like an object. She had then told him to never tell anyone she said that.
It was just one of many such small secrets he knew. It was always "don't tell anyone I said that" or "don't tell anyone you saw that" when something happened that made his mother different from other people. He did not mind her being different, but keeping so many secrets was hard sometimes. He understood that very bad things would happen though when secrets were told to the wrong people, so he kept his mouth shut. Yun therefore usually spent his days learning as much as he could to fill his head with other things he could talk about. The more he knew, the less likely it would be to accidentally slip up and tell a secret his mother had entrusted him with.
Raven stretched not unlike a cat and yawned, flapping his wings a few times.
"Morning," Yun yawned and also stretched. "Do you think the food court is still open for breakfast?" He was not an early bird like his mother and since he did not have to accompany her to work anymore, there was no reason for him to get up early. The rays of the sun meant that it still was mid-morning though.
"Woe betide them if not," Raven grumbled. He was not a morning person and was especially moody when he was hungry.
"We'll go downstairs in a moment then. Just let me get ready first." His mother and Auntie Satomi would fuss over him again if he did not manage to look at least a little proper when he went downstairs. He picked up a comb with magic—an act that would have required high concentration a year ago but came eay to him now—and tried his best at taming his messy mane. Raven meanwhile picked up a brush and got to work on brushing Yun's coat. As good as Yun's magic had become, it was still difficult for him to use the brush correctly. Most of the time he used to much force and accidentally scraped his skin underneath the fur with it. Until he got better with such details, he left the brushing work to Raven. Luckily yanking his hair with a comb did not require such fine skills.
When Yun was finally decent and had donned a kimono—that much he managed to do without Raven's help—he picked up his bag and double-checked that he had everything. He then picked up the note his mother had left him for the day and read it while he walked out of the room and locked it behind him. Meanwhile Raven settled down on his back to nap a little longer. "Do you think they will have cheese?" Raven asked as they entered the food hall. Yun just rolled his eyes at the question. Cheese was not widely popular in Eriwon, but the hotel Mio prided itself with having very international food choices. That included cheese and Raven was crazy for it.
"When do they ever not have it?" Yun replied which made Raven huff. "Last Thursday they were out of cheese. It was horrible!" "You are quite spoiled for a Raccardi, do you know that?"
"I'm one of a kind!"
"Sure you are, Raven."
As instructed, Yun did not pick chicken feet from the buffet and also put some cheese on his plate for Raven. For himself he just took a bowl of rice—single grains of rice had been coloured in pink, green and orange with various spices, giving the usually boring looking dish an interesting look.
When both of them finished breakfast Yun walked over to the garden that was open to the public on that day. He was often allowed to be in it anyway, at least whenever Auntie Satomi was around. Glad to see that his favourite cherry tree still stood alone, he walked over to it and lay down on the roots. The ground was still chilly from the cold night, but he ignored it in favour of having nice surroundings for his studies.
He had never gone to school before because his mother said that it was too expensive. Yun did not mind though since his mother was a smart mare and she could teach him everything they knew at school anyway. She scraped her money together to buy him books, and what she could not buy him, she wrote down herself or even taught him in her free time. Especially magic was something she could not afford materials of, since it was an expensive art. Luckily, she knew magic and even though she was not an air mage, she could teach him plenty of useful things. He already mastered levitation and small wind gusts, which Auntie Satomi kept complimenting him about. Apparently it was rare for someone his age to have such a good grasp on magic already. He was proud of his talent and kept studying it vigurously. History was much more boring, which was why he usually skipped it to practice magic instead. "Better read the chapter first, or Quán will blame me for it again," Raven said as Yun took out his spell notes. He pouted at the black Raccardi, but the chimera just scowled at him in return. They ended up having a stare contest, which Yun eventually lost with a sigh. "Fine," he said and took out the thick history book. It was a very pretty book and his mother had paid a lot of money for it. In it were illustrations of historical events that not only included Eriwon, but also the rest of Mereldia. For some things, his mother had even written small notes that stuck between the pages. On them were fun or not to fun facts about different historical events that the history book did not say anything about. His mother was smart, knowing even more than the history book itself! A boring hour or two passed as Yun read about a drought in Koruna several hundred years ago and how the kings dealed with it. It was not as exciting as the witch hunts in Nordberg or as interesting as the beginnings of the slave markets in Eriwon, but it was a mendatory lecture anyway. When he finally put his history book back into his bag and took out his spell notes again, it was already noon. He would not have a lot of time until his mother's shift would end and she would pick him up. Yun started his practise like he always did: by levitating some objects around him. A stick, a leaf, a stone, his bag. When he levitated Raven, who had curled up at Yun's side to take a nap, the Raccardi gave a protesting screech and a hiss. "I have claws, kid. Don't make me use them!" He growled as Yun put him down on the ground again.
"But Raaaaaven, I need your help to practise upcurrents!" Yun whined and directed his blue puppy eyes at the Raccardi. Raven caved with an eye roll and then unfurled his wings. "I swear to the gods, if you fling me against a tree branch again, then your days are numbered."
"I'll try not to," the colt said with a slight wince. The last time he had dabbled in upcurrents, he had used too much magic which had resulted in a particularly strong wind that had made poor Raven crash headfirst into the branch above him. This time he would be more careful to not give the Raccardi a bump again.

Sinan | Scout
Sinan isn’t a morning person and would like to stay all day in bed till noon, but if he wanted breakfast, he had to get up earlier. The hotel had a limited time when they served breakfast, so kinda was forced to open his eyes and stand up. The stallion got dressed and spend longer, on styling his mane, than he wanted. It was kinda tricky with hair beads. I should probably get a shorter haircut. Sinan thought while looking in the mirror. The new look wasn’t bad, but he also missed his short messy mane. Finally, the stallion was ready. He left the room and went downstairs.
There was a big selection of food, so Sinan had no problem to find something he liked. It was kinda weird to eat without the other two of his teammates, but he also enjoyed the alone time. They traveled together for weeks, so he earned a little alone time before, they would start the investigation and be together - again. When Sinan finished breakfast, he decided to get some fresh air. As he found out, that the hotel had a private garden that was open for the guests, he decided to check it out. It was big and beautiful with a lot of different plants. The highlight were the cherry trees. Beautiful as ever, just as Sinan had kept them in memory. Walking through the garden, he greeted the guests who walked past him, especially pretty mares. It wasn’t a mare who catches his eye, but a colt who reminds him of someone. Sinan stopped and observed him. It didn’t take long that the stallion realized that the colt looked a lot like him. You could tell that he was surprised and confused by looking at his face. Is he mine? was Sinan’s first thought. But that was impossible. Brook was the only one who got pregnant with him and she was dead, just as her child. Sinan looked around to see if there’s someone with the colt, maybe his mother or father, but he was all by himself. Just a Raccardi was keeping him company. It looked like the colt used levitation on his little friend, but it didn’t look under control. It would be just a matter of time when the Raccardi would fall to the ground or fly around the garden. He had to admit, that the last option would be quite entertaining.
Sinan finally looked away, not that someone would call him a creeper. Actually, he wanted to walk away, but his curiosity was too big. He hesitated before approaching the colt. “I don’t call myself an expert, but that’s definitely not the right way to do it.” Sinan said with a smile, as he stopped before the young horse. He left enough room between them, so the colt wouldn’t feel uncomfortable and run away, or even call for help.

Mio Satomi | Wonsu citizen - High society
Words: 525
It was odd for Satomi to be up and awake and talk to the guests. They had all just woken up and were eating their breakfast, but she felt as if it was mid-day. Her sense of time was off, but she tried not to let it affect her. She took a little food since it had been some hours since she ate that piece of bread. She enjoyed it in the eating halls with the rest of the guests and looked around, studying them, as she did so often.
When she got tired of that, she went up to her room again. She had to get ready since she had work to do and had to be prepared for that. While doing that, she wondered if Yun was already up and studying, but then came to the conclusion that he likely was. Her room on the highest floor had a good view of the garden, and when she peeked out of the window she saw him laying there under his favorite tree, with the book that his mother had given him. I will have to talk with Quán about that, she thought. I think I have books he can use, there is no need for her to keep buying them. The meeting she had was nothing particular. Just a Merchant she needed to talk with about spices, but it was out of her area of knowledge, so she needed help with the kitchen-chef that was doing something else, so it took more time than it had to. As soon as the merchant was out of sight she let out a sigh. She had to go through an awful lot of small-talk, and it tired her. I need a break.
Still smiling to all the guest she made eye contact with, she walked outside to the garden since she wanted to say hi to Yun. He never failed to put her in a good mood. Before she got too close, she saw that a man was approaching him. It was nothing new, the guests talked with each other all the time, and he was often mistaken for one. Then it was that she realized that it was the same man that came in this early morning, and not only that, he looked an awful lot like Yun. She had not seen that before because it was so dark. Could it be...? she wondered. Quán had never said anything about the father Yun, and whenever the topic came up - mostly out of their control - she was fast to change the subject. No, she concluded. At least not yet. She did not want to make conclusions just yet, not to mention that the only fact was that they looked like each other and that the age seemed to be more or less fitting too.
She did not want to interrupt them, but she also did not want to lose sight of them. She stood in the background and admired the cherry trees. She made sure to stand inside the field of view that Yun could see. Then he could call her if needed.

Yun | precious baby boy
Yun, who had tried to create the right wind to let Raven be able to fly easily was interrupted by a sudden voice.
"I don’t call myself an expert, but that’s definitely not the right way to do it.”
By breaking his concentration, he accidentally created too much wind, that let Raven forcully fly up in the tree. Luckily, the Raccardi managed to avoid a collision with the bigger branches this time.
Yun turned around to the stranger with the same scowl he always saw his mother make when a guest demanded uncouth things of her. "Mama always says that when you cannot say anything nice, you should not say anything at all. If you can do it better, then show me."
Challenging a total stranger, an adult no less, was probably not something his mother would approve of, but Yun did not like being treated like a kid. He would turn four in winter after all, so he was practically a grown-up! Besides, he could see Auntie Satomi nearby. If anything drastic would happen, she would be able to step in and might even throw the guest out of the hotel. He had nothing to fear.

Sinan | Scout
Sinan wasn’t surprised when the colt lost control over his levitation trick and the Raccardi flew up in the tree. It was hard work, to master air magic as you had to stay calm and focused. Which was very difficult while having distractions or in a fight. As a colt, Sinan had big problems with his air magic, as he couldn’t deal with his feelings. He was angry at his family but he tried to act cool in front of others. Deep inside he was broken and sad - asking himself why he’s such a failure. Therefore his air magic was never perfect or even acceptable. His levitation spells were a disaster, everything flew through the air. It wasn’t uncommon that someone got hit with a branch in the face. Sinan got better with his magic at the time, when he accepted his feelings and balanced them out. Therefore he was actually impressed with the colt’s skills. It looked like he got a lot of potential.
“Sorry, I didn’t want to sound rude.” Sinan apologized with a smile. “If that’s a challenge, I have to come up with another trick.” he said, as he looked at the ground before his hooves. Just a second later a little, unharmful whirlwind appeared, that lifted some leaves and dirt from the ground. It sure wasn’t one of his best spells - far from it - but it would be stupid to show off with a high skilled spell. Sinan shouldn’t draw too much attention to himself, as he should appear as a wanderer, making a little stop in Eriwon before continuing his journey. “So, what do you say?” the dark stallion asked with a smile, as he looked at the colt - the whirlwind still spinning before his hooves.

Yun | precious baby boy
The colt watched with curiosity as the stranger summoned a small whirlwind. Was he a mage too? "Woah, that's so cool," Yun said in awe. "Meh, your mum can do better than that, kid. Don't be too impressed," Raven suddenly threw in as he landed next to Yun and threw the stallion a suspicious glance. The Raccardi did not like it when strangers talked to him even though Yun himself did not really mind. He had grown up in the hotel after all, so strangers talked to him all the time. In Raven's eyes, no one could be trusted though and he took his role as a partial guardian very seriously.
"Don't be rude, Raven." "I just call 'em as I see them." The Raccardi shrugged before turning his attention to his uneven fur and ruffled feathers.
Yun's attention, on the other hand, went to the stranger again and to the small whirlwind. He was about to ask if he could teach Yun that trick, but then faltered when he noticed something more interesting he suddenly wanted to remark. "Hey, you look a lot like me!" He said with a grin. "Funny coincidence. Mama said silver bay is a rare colour here in Eriwon."
Yes, this was by far not the first time Yun met someone with a similar coat colouration as himself, but that did not mean that he did not get excited when he did meet them. When horses had dark coats like him, then they usually had a dark or a brown mane to accompany it. Bright manes on dark-coated horses were a lot rarer. "Raven also has a rare coat and feather colour!" Yun said as he pointed to his Raccardi friend who in turn just rolled his eyes. "Desert Raccardis are usually brown and have bright-coloured fur but Raven is all black. People on the market thought he was possessed by a demon, but he just looks cool." Yun found it necessary to empathize the latter. People usually did not appreciate Raccardis much since they were slaves, but Raven was his best friend, so it was important to show how amazing he was.

Sinan | Scout

Yun | precious baby boy
------------——— ———------------ Quán | the spy no one expected
The day had been rather uneventful. Changing bed sheets, cleaning messy rooms, scrubbing the baths after the people had left and getting one or two complaints by nitpicky guests. It was a normal workday and barely worth the mention.
When Quán returned to her room she was not surprised to find Yun and Raven gone. She quickly changed from her work clothes into one of her many outfits that included a long dress, a headscarf and a veil. It was completely Korunian-style clothing, which was something she had grown fond of over the years. In the hotel, she could usually go about her day unperturbed, but out on the streets, the likelihood of running into someone who could know her was significantly higher. After braiding her mane in a practised manner and applying the makeup that made her eyes—one of the only parts of her that were visible—look more Eriwonese, she eventually put on the veil. She checked her reflection in the mirror one last time before putting on her bags and picking up the scrap of paper that was her shopping list. She did not need much, especially not food, but with the full moon drawing closer she wanted to be prepared. Not that Yun knew about those preparations and she had no real way of explaining the 'why' to him anyway.
When she went downstairs to the gardens, where she strongly suspected Yun to be, she greeted others of the staff, even Raccardis. The latter always gave her a secretive smile which she returned with a wink. Like Satomi, they knew most of the secrets of this hotel, including Quán's. While the constant back and forth in the first year of her time at the hotel had been amusing, she quickly had found out that it was more beneficial to work together with Satomi rather than against her. They were both curious by nature and both had skills when it came to spying, so it practically was a match made in heaven. It had taken another year until Quán had finally felt safe enough to confess about what she was. Which meant that she told Satomi the Caspana part and not the 'I'm from a secret herd that fights faeries' part. The latter was something that no one ever should know. Quán might be in exile, but she still lived by the herd rules of secrecy. No one was ever supposed to know about the herd, not even or especially not Yun. It would just complicate things and she had just managed to get comfortable with her new life. There was no way to go back anyway.
Sometimes, there were incidents though. Things she could tell Satomi about vaguely to prevent the worst. When herd members on a mission checked into the hotel, for example, she would tell Satomi to steer clear of those guests, since they would rather spy on her than the other way around. At the same time, she would ask her friend if she could work in the kitchen or other jobs where she was not seen by guests as long as those guests stayed. Sometimes that meant weeks.
With the recent mysterious murders, someone from her old herd was bound to show up. It had been over two months, which was enough time to travel to Eriwon. The thought let Quán be on edge and wary. She did not like being so close to people who could recognize her and therefore call out her whole charade. It was like walking on a tightrope where the smallest misstep was fatal. Sure, she had been a Scout—not a particularly good one, but not a bad one either—but those people were Scouts too. Scouts with more experience who were on a mission. It was unlikely that she would be able to outsmart them when they were on the lookout. Hiding in plain sight was, therefore, the best option.
When Quán entered the garden, she saw Satomi seemingly admire the cherry trees. At least this was what it looked like to an outsider's perspective, but she knew the mare better than that. Quán quickly walked over to a group of Korunian women—a gazelle and another mare—to blend in. As predicted, the two guests were too wrapped up in their own conversation about fabrics to notice the third person who had joined them. Quán then allowed her view to shift to where Satomi was looking and spotted Yun, right where she had expected him, laying under his favourite cherry tree. What made her blood run cold was the stallion he was talking to though. Oh no. By the gods, no! Satomi, who never missed anything, had meanwhile noticed Quán's approach. It was not surprising that she was able to tell her apart from other Korunian-style dressed women since she had helped Quán pick out those outfits herself. A quick desperate look towards the black mare, a nod towards Yun and the stallion and a clear shake of her head were all that was needed to convey Quán's message to her: Get Yun away from him. Quán did not dare to use telepathy while other magically gifted people were around. The last thing she needed was them picking up on her thoughts.

Mio Satomi | Wonsu citizen - High society
Words: 239
Satomi hummed an old song while looking at how the leaves slowly fell down all around her. But just for a moment she enjoyed it, she did not allow herself to relax and be inattentive for too long. She still wanted to be aware and keep an eye out for Yun, after all, the man he was talking too came in the middle of the night and had "traveled very far" as the mare had put it just a few hours ago.
Looking at the direction of the entrance to the garden by coincidence, she noticed Quán standing by herself. Or almost, she was blending in with two guests. She had a shocked expression for a moment, then desperately looked at her and then to Yun. It took Satomi only a moment to figure out what was happening. More of those guests? she thought. She did not hesitate to approach Yun and the guest he was talking with.
"Hi. Excuse me, but I have to steal this little man from you now," Satomi said to the guest in a polite tone. "Also, he has plans to get ready to today, does he not?" she asked, with the last part to Yun. Quán was early free this day, and she often used them with him, it was a good excuse she thought. At least Yun would not protest or accidentally make things more complicated to get him away.

Sinan | Scout
“Thank you for the invitation, I’ll keep it in mind,” Sinan said with a friendly smile. He didn’t know that the hotel had performances in the bar. It sure sounded interesting. If he would have some free time tomorrow evening, he would probably check it out. It was a great opportunity to relax after the long journey. Before Sinan could add anything else, a beautiful mare interrupted their conversation. Maybe a family member of the colt? “Sure. I didn’t mean to prevent him from his responsibilities.” the dark stallion answered and tried to apologize, as it looked that he interrupted the colt while learning.

Yun | precious baby boy
Yun looked up when Auntie Satomi approached and reminded him that he had things to do. He had totally lost track of time! Swiftly, with the help of Raven, he packed up all his notes, cautious to not leave anything behind in the rush and stood up. "I'm sorry, sir, but I have to go." He said with a polite bow of his head before following Satomi away from the gardens and back into the hotel.
Quán | the spy no one expected
Quán had not been this nervous since a demon had almost taken her out on a hunt a few moons back. Seeing Yun interact with him screamed danger and she wanted to do nothing more than to snatch her son and run away with him. She couldn't do that though. Her emotions were secondary right now. The primary objective clearly was to get Yun away from the stallion without arising suspicion. As much as it hurt Quán to admit it, Satomi was way better at that than she was. Sure, she wore a disguise instead of an illusion spell for a reason—to not be picked out of a crowd by a magic footprint—but she doubted that from a close ratio anyone would be able to miss the traces of fae magic within her.
It was a constant annoyance which she had to work with. The leg injury had been healed, but the pregnancy with Yun had left traces of black magic within her anyway. It was an unnatural part that stood out like a sore thumb. Usually, people had a clear magic pattern, something between light and dark and then with a nuance of three elements to accompany it. For Quán it was like her light magic has spots in it. Something like a corruption that spread at the most inopportune of times. It was the main reason she preferred to stay away from magic users that had experience with fae since it would clearly strike them as odd. They would then look further and this was what wasn't allowed to happen under any circumstances. She just wanted to live her life alone in peace, but the universe was clearly out to get her.
Not being able to do anything, she eventually retreated back inside the hotel to not provoke the attention of the stallion. She walked back to her room where Yun and Satomi were undoubtedly headed and thought about things she could do. She had saved up holiday days for an opportunity like this. Maybe she and Yun could go out of the city for a few weeks and wander around the villages of Eriwon. That seemed like a nice thing to do. But she could not do that. The full moon was close and with them meddling in those affairs she had to act wittily to not cross their paths. Yun would at least be safe since she could leave him with Satomi on those nights. The black mare knew as much as Quán did about what was going on, so she surely would understand the reasoning. Maybe this full moon Quán would finally be lucky. All it would take was a well-shot arrow and it was over. Easy. She was exceptional with weapons, as Minona had not grown tired of pointing out to her. She could do this. Afterwards, she'd have peace and quiet again and go back to her only shady activity being to sneak out of the hotel every four days to hunt at night.
When she arrived in her room, she passed the time until Satomi and Yun would arrive by pacing back and forth, letting her thoughts run wild before sorting them to form a plan. Plans she could do. She was decent at them. If her plan would work was another question altogether.
